Exploring Video Doorbell Brands, More than Just Ring

If you Google ‘video doorbells,’ you will see the usual suspects, like Ring, Nest, and Skybell. But did you know there is a growing market for video doorbells?

Most people interested in video doorbells are aware of Ring, today I wanted to spend some time discussing some of the lesser known brands. In addition to listing the brand, I will list the number of video doorbells they offer, best features, and which Ring video doorbell they compare to.

After I discuss these brands, I will conclude this post with a list of video doorbells that are in their early stages. These doorbells are running Go Fund Me campaigns, testing, and other stages of the startup. Finally, I will conclude this section with a discussion on their chances of entering the market.

Major Players

Major players are defined as either having a strong presence in the security market or brands that have a strong presence in the video doorbell market. Brands that have a strong presence in the security market are defined as brands that have a number of product offerings, can be purchased at big box stores (Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon), or appear at the top of search results.

Brands that have a strong presence in the video doorbell smart market are defined as brands that offer different video doorbells, can be found via a Google search, or purchased at a big box store.

Ring

In my opinion, Ring is the undisputed leader of video doorbells. Ring offers 5 video doorbells to suit any and every need. Ring uses cloud storage to save events, and includes both wired and wireless options.

Fun fact: Many people aren’t aware that Ring is owned by Amazon. Also, Ring uses Amazon Web Services for storing data, sending and receiving data, and anything else related to the Ring brand.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Currently, Ring has 5 cameras listed on their website. However, they recently announced a stickup/ popup camera for apartment owners. This information is not listed on their website.

The real number of doorbells offered by Amazon is more than 5, which I will discuss later.

Best Features

Ring has features to meet the needs of every homeowner. Personally, I like the Power over Ethernet option, but that doorbell is the most expensive currently on the market.

Below are the best features across all of the products:

  • Two-way talk
  • Cloud storage
  • Power over Ethernet
  • Remote viewing
  • Rechargable battery

Best Video Doorbell in the Product Line

If all things were equal, the best video doorbell is the Ring Elite. The stable, strong connection of Power over Ethernet is unbeatable. Click here to learn more about Power over Ethernet

If price is important, I like the Ring Video Doorbell 2. This is the best video doorbell offered by Ring because it can run on battery, and it has a quick release function.

Nest is another popular name in home security. Nest, is most known for their indoor security cameras and the camera features.

I first heard of August smart products when I was in need of a deadbolt for my home. August offers a number of smart products for your home or office.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Currently, August has one video doorbell in two colors: the August Doorbell Cam Pro 2nd Generation. This video doorbell can be purchased in black or silver.

Best Features

Below are my favorite features that are included with the August Doorbell Cam Pro:

  • Two-way audio
  • Full color Night video
  • Pair with any August smart lock
  • Adjustable motion sensitivity
  • Compact size

Ring Comparison

Because the Doorbell Cam Pro requires electricity, this doorbell is most comparable to the Ring video Doorbell Pro. These two doorbells share a lot of features including two-way talk, and adjustible motion detection, but August has the advantage of the color night vision.

VTech

When I think of VTech, I think of cordless phones and children’s toys, and security cameras. However, VTech also offers video doorbells. continue reading to learn more about the VTech video doorbell product line

The Ring Video Doorbell 1 only records in 720 resolution. Also, none of the Ring devices include a local storage option.

Remo+

I first learned of the Remo+ brand while I was doing research for another article. Remo+ is the first security camera for apartment dwellers. The camera is mounted to the top of any door, and points straight down.

In addition to the above camera Remo+ also sells video doorbells.

This video doorbell can be compared to both the Ring Video Doorbell 1 and 2. The Remo+ offering has a 720 video resolution which is the same as the Ring Doorbell 1, but is only battery powered (which is the same as the Ring Video Doorbell 2). In addition, the video doorbell offered by Remo+ looks like a mix of the Ring Video Doorbells.

Swann

Swann is another major player in the security camera market. Swann offers a number of wired and wired solutions for consumers. In addition, they have an extensive footprint on internet search results.

However, the Smart Video Doorbell is most closely related to the Ring Video Doorbell 1. Both devices include a wired or wireless storage option. Both devices use a battery pack to power the video doorbells. Finally, the Ring Video Doorbell 1 has a better motion detection distance.

Skybell

Skybell has a strong name in the video doorbell market. This brand can be purchased at big box stores like Amazon. In addition, Skybell offers a few different options for consumers.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Skybell has two video doorbells for consumers to choose from. Below are those offerings

There are three differences between the Skybell offerings and the Ring Video Doorbell 2. Those differences are:

  • Subscription fees
  • Full-color night vision
  • Operating temperature

Ring has a monthly/ yearly subscription fee. In addition, they do not have color night vision. Finally, the coldest temperature the Ring product line is rated for is -5.

Zmodo

The final brand on this list is most know for both wired and wireless security cameras. Zmodo also features CCTV and POE camera systems.

Ring Comparison

Zmodo has created a product line that is almost an exact match as the Ring video doorbell product line. Each camera in the Zmodo product line matches nicely with products offered by Ring. The only difference between the two brands in the Ring Elite. Zmodo does not have a video doorbell that includes Power over Ethernet.

Up and Comers

Now that I’ve covered the well known, major players, let’s spend a few minutes discussing the lesser know brands. These brands are not featured on most big box websites, but they can be purcahsed. Also, these video doorbells offer something unique that many of the major brands don’t.

Arbor

Like other video doorbells on this list, I stumbled upon Arbor while researching for other blog posts. Arbor is a video doorbell and chime that available for preorders only as it is in the prototype stage.

Also, you can back the project on Indiegogo. The project started in mid 2018, and has raised 23% of its goal.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Currently there is one video doorbell and one chime available for preorder.

Best Features

Here are a few of the features listed on the Indiegogo page:

  • First all-in-one home security system
  • 3-minute installation
  • No monthly fees
  • 1-year rechargeable battery
  • Alarm included
  • 160-degree field of view
  • 1080 resolution

Ring comparison

This video doorbell most closely resembles the Ring Video Doorbell 2. Both devices use a rechargeable battery, record in 1080 resolution and work in low temperatures.

Blink

Blink is kind of a misnomer for a few reasons. First, they have a decent presence in the security camera world. Second, they were recently purchased by Amazon (Amazon now owns two security camera companies, Ring).

I listed Blink as an up and comer because I don’t know how long the product line will be available. As I mentioned, Ring recently added another video doorbell to the product line. How long will they have this overlap in the market?

Number of Doorbells in Market

None, there is talk on the Blink forums that Blink was purcahsed by Amazon because of the technology behind that camera and not the camera itself. There are conflicting reports that Amazon is still planning on releasing a Blink video doorbell, so who knows.

Netvue

Netvue is a growing brand that sells video doorbells on online stores like Amazon.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Currently, they have 2 products available to consumers: the Netvue Vuebell Video Doorbell and the Netvue Belle AI Video Doorbell

  • Create clips
  • Share clips
  • 24/7 record

  • Two-way audio
  • Facial recognition
  • guest delegation

Ring Comparison

The Netvue Belle AI Video Doorbell seems like a cool doorbell as it is packed with a number of features not included on any other video doorbell mentioned in this blog post. If you’re a conspiracy theorist they features will turn you off.

Soliom

Last but not least is the Soliom brand. This brand has solar powered video doorbells and cameras.

Number of Doorbells in Market

Currently, Soliom has one video doorbell on the market called the Soliom Solar Power Wireless Doorbell Smart Door Camera X80.

Here are a few of the features listed on their website:

  • Motion tracking
  • local storage and free cloud storage
  • 165-degree viewing angle
  • 1080P resolution
  • Weatherproof reating of IP65
  • Live streaming

Ring comparison

With the exception of the solar power, and local storage, this camera is similar to the Ring Video Doorbell 2. Both cameras include night vision, cloud storage, and 1080P resolution.

Brand with the Best Chances for Success

Of the up and comers listed, I think the Netvue has the best chance of success. I think Netvue will be hear for the long hall because of the AI technology. Slowly, we are moving to a more Machine learning/ AI based society, and there tech will only get more advanced.

Additional Questions

Are video doorbells safe?

Yes, video doorbells are safe by default. All video doorbells use security protocols when sending data over the internet. These protocols are similar to the ones used when you bank or credit union is sending information over the internet.

With that said, your video doorbell is only as secure as your security settings. Your doorbell camera will be less secure if you use weak passwords, use an non-secure wireless connection, and don’t secure your router. Omitting these simple steps will open both your video doorbell and home WIFI to snooping, spying, and data theft.

What are Video Doorbells?

Simply stated, video doorbells are security cameras for your home or work that include a doorbell function. This function sends a notification via the internet to mobile devices and computers letting you know that someone is at the door.

Most video doorbells include the following features:

  • Two-way talk
  • Motion detection
  • Event recording
  • Cloud storage
  • Push notifications to your mobile device

The exact number of features will vary based on device, and brand.

Do Doorbell Cameras Record All the Time?

No, most video doorbells do not record all of the time. They begin recording based on an event. The event can be a motion detection, ring, or live viewing event.

In addition, the length of the recordings will vary be brand, event type, and possiblly the user settings. For more information of doorbell cameras and recording, click this link.
